To paraphrase President Harry S. Truman, “If you want a want a friend in politics, get a dog.” I can speak from first-hand experience as to how a dog can help to keep you grounded and stress-free during a very turbulent time in one's life. In 2004, I was approached by members of my political party to run for the PA State Legislature.
After much discussion with my trusty Golden Retriever, Denver, I decided to throw my hat in the ring. Boy, was that a life-changing experience! I enthusiatically made my announcement to friends and family, but I had no idea how many friends would simply turn their heads and pretend not to hear my call out for their help with this endeavor. Of course my family was with me all the way, not to mention Denver's assistance throughout. I would take him on my canvassing trips throughout neighborhoods in the district. More people wanted to meet him and kind of ignored me. Hey, I worked Denver by any means necessary on getting the vote!! Not many people have been through this experience, and now I understand why so few people get involved in running for electiom because it is an extremely stressful time. After reading in newspapers and receiving hate mail as to how horrible I was, I would put on my tougher than leather attitude. But when I was alone, I would cry on Denver's shoulder, and he never minded. He never said... “well, maybe you shouldn't cut taxes.” Or... “maybe the political world isn't ready for a strong woman.” No, he just kind of sat there and let me get it all out. Well, I didn't win the election, and I lost contact with most of the people in Harrisburg. But, do you know what? Denver was waiting for me and still supporting me on election night and was there for me until he made that final walk across the Rainbow Bridge in 2007.
